Japan’s Hidden Ravine & Forest Walk Along the Tama River

Just two hours from central Tokyo, the Ohtama Walking Trail is the perfect escape into Japan’s deep nature. Instead of crowded temples, you get moss-covered forest paths, dramatic rock formations, and the soothing sound of the Tama River flowing beside you the whole way.

The undisputed star of the route is Hatonosu Gorge (鳩ノ巣渓谷) — a narrow, dramatic ravine where sheer rock walls crowd the river, and the water carves through ancient stone. It’s one of the most photographed spots in Okutama, and for good reason.

Trail typePoint-to-point trail along the Tama River

Start: Okutama Station (奥多摩駅)
Leave the station and follow the riverside path heading downstream toward Hatonosu.

  • Hikawa Gorge (氷川渓谷)
    It’s very close to Okutama Station—about a 6-minute walk.
If you walk through Okuhikawa Shrine (奥氷川神社) and head down toward the river, you’ll find a suspension bridge.
  • Moegi Bridge (もえぎ橋)
A 10-minute walk from Okutama Station.
When you see the “もえぎの湯” sign from the road, turn left. You can enjoy views of the valley from the suspension bridge.
  • Shiromaru Dam (白丸ダム)
A mysterious, quiet dam with a distinctive stepped structure. A great short rest point with mountain scenery.
  • Hatonosu Ravine (鳩ノ巣渓谷) — THE highlight
Massive rocks crowd the riverbed and the gorge narrows dramatically. Walk the Hatonosu suspension bridge for a panoramic view of the ravine and its turquoise-green water. This is your photo stop — give it time.
  • Upper Falls and Lower Falls (上の滝・下の滝)
Beyond the Hotaru Bridge (ホタル橋) spanning the stream, there is a small bridge; the Upper Falls are located above it, and the Lower Falls are below it. This refreshing area is perfect for recharging.

Finish: Kori Station (古里駅)
Before arriving at the station, houses come into view, and the road gradually opens up to reveal a valley landscape.

  • From Shinjuku: Take the JR Chuo Line to Tachikawa or Ome, then change to the JR Ome Line heading for Okutama. Total less than 2 hours.
  • Get off at Okutama Station to begin.
  • To return: From Kori Station, take the JR Ome Line back toward Tokyo.
  • Pro tip: The train line runs parallel to the trail. If you’re tired partway, you can hop off at Hatonosu Station or Shiromaru Station instead of finishing the full route.

Do I need to speak Japanese?
No. The trail is clearly signposted, and the stations have English signs. Having both English and Japanese names written down helps.
There is an information center in front of Okutama Station. You can pick up a map of the “Ohtama Walking Trail” in English (see the PDF below) there.

    Is it safe for children?
Yes, for older kids. The trail is easy to moderate, but please watch your children carefully near the water’s edge.

Can I do it in half a day?
Yes. Start by 9:00, and you’ll finish at Kori by early afternoon with time to spare.

Is there a place where we can have lunch?
If you’re bringing a packed lunch, there’s a gazebo and outdoor tables just past Shiromaru Dam.
Along the trail, you’ll find a restaurant called Earth Garden.
